An occasional look at the impetus behind a particular piece of work. Will be updated periodically.
During the World Cup 2002 and further still during Euro 2004, I noticed something, which was very striking to me at the time.
Lots of black lads and Asian lads were unashamedly wearing England football jerseys and St George's flags. It was strange to me because growing up in the seventies the Union Jack and St George's flag were synonymous with the National Front and BNP. They were symbols of Englishness as whiteness and we were barred and couldn't belong. So I wanted to explore what had changed in that period.
Has there been a clouding of identity and what it is to be English today, an all-inclusive Englishness? Are we all passing Norman Tebbitt's cricket test?
